Comprised of two photographers who also work individually, Colectivo Gama was founded in 2010 with the objective of critically exploring the Dominican collective memory. Colectivo Gama uses digital technology as a tool to connect the possibility of making a direct record of reality, and the ability to transform images using a wide variety of digital manipulation techniques.

The old Edificio Morey, located in Santo Domingo City, was one of the deteriorated buildings photographed by Colectivo Gama in their series Polvo en el Viento (Dust in the Wind), 2012. This series uses deserted construction sites as visual signs to explore the moral and social abandonment of the Dominican Republic by its national political establishment. In their subsequent series Esto no lo arregla nadie (Nobody can fix this), 2013, the interior of Edificio Morey becomes a metaphor for similar concerns.

The image in this exhibition reveals the strategy used by Colectivo Gama to create an incisive commentary. The photographers emphasize the raw, wound-like quality of the empty building’s rooms through an expressive treatment of surfaces and color that gives the image an attractive but disturbing look.

Colectivo Gama appeared on the art scene of the Dominican Republic in 2010. They have exhibited several projects since this time. Their series Polvo en el Viento (Dust in the Wind) was exhibited at Photoimagen 2012, an international photographic event celebrated in their country, and was nominated as best exhibition of the year by the local section of the Association Internationale des Critiques d’Art (AICA.) In 2013, their work Polvo en el Tiempo (Dust in Time) was a finalist in the awards of the XXVII Bienal Nacional de Artes Visuales. In 2015, they presented their most recent exhibition, Al acecho (On the Prowl.)
